The Confederation of Cameroon Workers Syndicate, have in a press release addressed the President of the Republic, H.E Paul Biya, and the Prime Minister Philemon Yang, announcing a general strike action to take place on July 10, 2014, against the recent increase of fuel prices in the country.
The document which 'The Sun newspaper' procured a copy was done in Yaounde on July 2, signed by the presidents of the various workers union, including CSTC-USLC-CSP-CTUC-CCT-ENTENTE-CSAC-UGTC-CGT-Liberte-CCWTU-CSIC and CGSTC.
According to the release, the Confederation states that recent fuel price increase which was announced on June 30 and which took effect on July 1, is contrary to the resolutions arrived at during their meeting on May 5, 2014.
The Confederation outlines as reasons, the fact that presently, Cameroonians are going through difficult moments for example, the degrading social climate in the country, the low purchasing power of the population and workers, insecurity, youth unemployment and underemployment, constant water shortages, electricity etc. and thus, they strongly state that they will fight with their last energy this move which they consider a measure to further impoverish the population.
The communiqué finally states that the general strike action will take place, except the government immediately revokes the announcement of the price increase and also put in place a body to negotiate with the Confederation.
