The 23rd Edition of the World Biodiversity Day which is usually celebrated by the UN on the May 22 each year will be celebrated in Cameroon on Thursday, May 26, 2016.

The UN theme for the 2016 celebration is “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods.” Following the theme, the United Nations aims at halting biodiversity loss, investing in people, their lives and their well-being.

Celebration of the day in Cameroon has been marked by weeklong activities to sensitize the population on the importance of preserving the environment.

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Biodiversity is the foundation for life and for the essential services provided by ecosystems. It therefore underpins peoples’ livelihoods and sustainable development in all areas of activity, including economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, among others.
