Cameroonians will on February 11, 2016, celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Youth Day. In order to ensure the success of the event, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Foutsou, chaired a planning meeting in Yaounde on November 25, 2015. Among the major decisions taken at the meeting was the construction of youth emblems in all regional headquarters and the clarification that the right appellation is Youth Day; not National Youth Day.
Minister Mounouna noted that the 50th anniversary of the Youth Day comes at a sensitive moment in the annals of Cameroon. This is characterised by the ongoing national civic education and integration campaign, the recent graduation of another set of youth volunteers and conscripts, the hosting of the 2016 Female African Cup of Nations competition by Cameroon, and the implementation of government’s Emergency Plan to boost economic growth, from many youth stand to benefit, the Minister pointed out.
He also mentioned the rise in societal challenges such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, insecurity, managing the thousands of Internally-displaced People and refugees from neighbouring countries and terrorism. Given all these, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education called on stakeholders to ensure that the 2016 Youth Day is celebrated in a memorable way through innovative activities.
