89 cases of cholera, 10 recorded deaths in the northern region

The cholera outbreak is under control in the northern region owing to the figures released Tuesday by the regional delegation of the public health of the North.

According to Dr. Gauravsingh Sali, Coordinator of the regional centre for prevention and fight against epidemics, 89 cases of cholera were recorded in the 32nd epidemiological week for 10 deaths.

Health districts affected by the epidemic are Bibemi and Pitoa in the Department of the Benue, Figuil, Guider and Mayo-Oulo in Mayo-Louti, and Touboro in Mayo-Rey. Guider is most affected health district, with 38 cases for 3 deaths. It is closely followed by Pitoa, which now totals 16 cases for 3 deaths. In Touboro, no new case has been recorded since the start of the outbreak last March.

On the other hand, there were new cases at Mayo-Oulo, which recorded its first case in the month of April 2014. However, the health areas mostly affected by the epidemic are located along a river that pulls its bed from Mayo-Tsanaga in the far North, home of the epidemic.

To contain the epidemic, public authorities, through the regional delegation of Northern public health, lead advocacy through community relays. Advocacy meetings are also organized in the villages, as well as equipment that were pre-positioned in areas at risk in order to contain the epidemic.
