Activities have been launched to commemorate the fourth edition of the African Day of Decentralisation and Local Governance with focus on women.
The Minister Delegate in the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Jules Doret Ndongo launched the activities this 10th August 2015 in Yaounde.
On the occasion, Minister Jules Doret Ndongo paid homage to all women involved in the promotion of decentralisation and local development in the country.
Participants at the event decried the poor representation of women in governance in the country. They explained that only 10 per cent of women are actively involved in local administration, as opposed to the projected 30 per cent.
On his part, the President of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon (CVUC), Emil Andze Andze called for dialogue and new strategies to insert more women into local development.
He however indicated that there has been considerable improvement with the presence of more female mayors in the country; 29 since 2013.
Emil Andze Andze appreciated their contributions and encouraged their peers to follow the example.
The occasion is therefore a platform for stakeholders to reflect on how to reinforce female participation in administration.
