Fear and tension reign in Konene village, Fonfuka sub-division in Boyo division, North West Cameroon following Wednesday’s attack by four unidentified gunmen clad in military outfits.

The attack which occurred on the early hours of Wednesday left a 43-year old man, Chibu Salriki dead.

The hoodlums made away with physical cash estimated at over 2MFCFA from cattle traders. Reports say ever since the attack which left several others injured, inhabitants are said to be living in horror as the attackers are yet to be tracked-down.

Confirming the attack via telephone yesterday from Bamenda, Prince Ngwieh Michelson Sah, a native of Konene, told the Journal: “On Wednesday October 15, I received a call from the village informing me that armed men had attacked some cattle traders. You know in our area, we have two cattle markets – Konene and Su-Bum .So some traders left Konene and were going down to Su-Bum Cattle Market in the early hours of that ill-fated morning. They were about four including one anti-gang member”.

The former North West regional president of the Cameroon National Youth Council went further to explain that on their way down just after leaving Konene towards Buabua , the traders were ambushed by four men dressed in military outfits and carrying military guns.

“There is tension in the village especially given that the guy who was shot and killed was a leader of the village anti-gang unit. There is no operational gendarme post in the area,” Sah lamented.

Asked if any efforts were being employed to track down the assailants, Sah disclosed that “Immediately I got wind of the attack, I informed the Governor of the situation. Also, I called the regional delegate for National Security and the Legion Commander, the Company Commander for Boyo and the Commissioner of Special Branch…we are still waiting on their intervention.”

Meanwhile following Wednesday’s incident that has reduced the entire Boyo division into a high risk zone , the fon of Sawi, Ngwieh Emmanuel is said to have alerted the administrative authorities, though we are told no official investigation has been launched this far.

Sawi fondom spans across villages like Konene, Buabua, Su-Bum, Kimbi and Ngunabum within Fonfuka sub-division.
