Army push back Boko Haram aggressors

Clashes occurred recently in the town of Ngouraya, in the Extreme-North region, between the Cameroonian army and presumed members of the Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram, who managed to burn down a village in the area.

No official toll of these clashes has been made public yet, but security sources contacted onsite by various local media announced several deaths. Despite this new attack by Boko Haram Islamists, a lull has been noted in the region affected by the clashes for several months, due in part to heavy losses inflicted these past months to Boko Haram by the Cameroonian army and its allies.

As a reminder, according to official statistics, the crimes of Boko Haram in Cameroon have already left over 1,000 dead. In order to stop the progression of these fundamentalists, the Cameroonian government deployed its army several months ago in the Extreme-North region, which borders Nigeria.

This security expenditure has already taken the equivalent of 1 to 2% of the GDP of the country, according to a recent estimate from the IMF.
