Cameroon canceled a regional conference for Central African budget officials because of a possible attack by Islamist militants on the capital, according to the Finance Ministry.

The conference that was scheduled to take place at the Hilton hotel in Yaounde has been called off, Gideon Adjomo, head of communications at the ministry, said by phone on Wednesday. “No new date has been set,” he said.

Security forces stepped up patrols last week as the government warned that militants might be planning bombings in the Central African nation’s two main cities, Yaounde and Douala. Residents have received phone messages asking them to be vigilant and avoid crowded places and government buildings.

Cameroon’s northern region has been the scene of a spate of bombings by suspected Boko Haram militants since January.
