Residents of the Bakassi Peninsular in Ndian Division of the South West Region , Cameroon officially got back from Nigeria six years ago, have been expressing gratitude to government for putting in place facilities that are serving as pull factors to the area. But as Oliver twist, the people of this area say much has been done but a lot remains to be done to give the zone the development push it so desires.
It emerged from an audience with an 11-member delegation from the peninsular Friday August 24 with the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, René Emmanuel Sadi that the greatest desire of Bakassi inhabitants is for the peninsular to be raised to an administrative division. The delegation leader who doubles as the Paramount Chief of the entire Bakassi Peninsular, Chief Anki Ambo Daniel stressed that the main issue discussed during the audience "was their aspiration to have a Division created in Bakassi as soon as possible." This was the main purpose of the visit, he said, while adding that other problems plaguing the zone also came to the fore. By demanding a Division, the people intend to enjoy the multifaceted development projects that are gradually transforming the area.
Other challenges, he said, included the tarring of roads in the locality. The tarring of the Loum-Kumba-Mundemba-Akwa road to link the peninsula to the rest of the country, Chief Anki Ambo Daniel noted, was one of the best things that could happen to the people of this area. Insecurity with cases of kidnappings, he hinted, also comprise one of the knots that are hard to crack in the zone. Therefore, the need to reinforce already existing law and order officials is indispensable. He acknowledged that in an effort to stamp its full sovereignty on the area, government continues to work to make life better for the citizens, efforts that they will forever make them remain grateful.
