Biya celebrates 82nd birthday on low-key

This memorable event usually occurred with activists of the CPDM, the political party in power, gathered with great zeal on 13th February each year, at the gates of the Presidential Palace headquarters in Etoudi, Yaoundé to sing 'Happy birthday' to Paul Biya.

But this year President Paul Biya celebrated his 82nd birthday on low-key. The celebration in the premises of the Unity Palace was also held in the strictest privacy. Paul Biya shared his cake with his wife, his offspring and a few confidants.

He was 49 years old when he inherited power which was left voluntarily by Ahmadou Ahidjo.

Today, his reign which has lasted 33 years is the longest in the history of Cameroon. The balance sheet of his governance has been a source of controversy.

Married to Jeanne Irène (deceased) and then to Chantal, Paul Biya is father to three children.
