Visiting Chief of Staff of the armed forces, General Rene Claude Meka was under attack at Fotokol.

He and other senior officers were on board the helicopter on their way to observe the situation at Fotokol on Thursday, October 23, 2014, when Boko Haram fighters fired several rockets into Fotokol Gambarou from Nigeria.

The helicopter of General Meka returned immediately with the entire delegation with the Chief of the army.

For several months, the Chief of the Armed Forces paid multiple visits to the north not only to galvanize the troops on the front line, but also to assess the situation along the border between Cameroon and Nigeria. Last August, General Claude Meka and his party had made the rounds of all the border towns which are frequently attacked by Islamist Boko Haram.

Arriving in Maroua earlier this week, the General was received by the Governor prior to heading on Fotokol.

City Gambarou which is in the hands of Boko Haram fighters in recent months, serves as a base for Islamists who cross the border to attack some Cameroonian cities in the Region of the Far North.
