Celebrations marking the release of some 27 hostages kidnapped by the deadly Nigerian sect, Boko Haram have been cut short with another deadly attack by the same group Wednesday evening.
Militants of the group, reportedly over 50 in number alighted from three armored vehicles and struck the BIR camp in Limani, Far North region of Cameroon.
According to Guibai Gatama, a northern elite, also a reporter who disposes credible information about Boko Haram insurgency, Wednesday’s ambush led to the killing of eight members of the Cameroonian army.
“8 elements of BIR, a unit of the Cameroonian army were killed Wednesday, October 15, 2014 in Limani, Mayo Sava division in a Boko Haram incursion,” Guibai wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.
The army has, however, succeeded in pushing the terrorists back and retained the territory. The militant group had last Sunday led another onslaught on the Cameroonian army, just one day after they released the hostages.
The army reacted swiftly with a counterattack which led to the arrest of four of the militant group members in Fotokol, around 11 a.m. but the war escalated to other localities of the region (Far North) including Amchidé, Banki, Fotokol, Makambara, Djokana and even Gambaru in Nigeria.
The attack is coming at the time when Nigeria and Cameroon are holding a three-day bilateral meeting in Abuja, Wednesday, 15 October to Friday 17 to fine-tune fresh strategies to stamp out terrorists from the West African sub-region. Cameroon is being represented in the meeting by senior officers of the military.
The meeting, the Journal was told is a follow-up of previous international and regional meetings to foster common ground in the fight against insurgency and terrorism.
