Brasseries du Cameroun, HYSACAM to recycle plastics

The leading brewery Les Brasseries Du Cameroun and HYSACAM have combined forces and urged their consumers to join in the fight against environmentally dangerous plastics especially that of non-biodegradable characteristics.

According to the Director of Quality safety and Environment at SABC or Brassaries du Cameroon Mboula Benoit, both parties collected 2 million plastic bottles in 2013 and that figure is expected to rise to 4million this year.

These bottles and packaging which mainly come from Brassaries factories and their subsidiary, SEMC, the mineral water producer, will initially undergo some mutation at HYSACAM before their transformation in specialized companies.

Although some jobs have been lost during the government crackdown on non-biodegradable plastics, some jobs have been created in this recollection project. After recycling, new products such as bags, water jugs, sweaters, watches and high-tech cards are expected to be resold in society without the initial environmental dangers.

Mboula Benoit says that the project is in line with the environmental protection regulations or legislation which were cosponsored and endorsed by both the Minister of Trades, Luc Magloire and the Minister of the Environment since October 2012, and is now being implemented.

According to our sources the text stipulated that "each manufacturer or distributor using non-biodegradable packaging shall put in place guidelines to facilitate the recuperation of the said packaging for recycling, sale or destruction".
