Britain Appreciates Resumption of Voter's Registration

The British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Bharat Joshi has expressed his country's satisfaction at electoral debate in Cameroon and the resumption of biometric voter's registration ahead of the upcoming municipal and legislative elections. He spoke at his Bastos-residence in Yaounde, Tuesday,

June 4, 2013 during the second edition of the monthly press conference with journalists of the national and international press.

The British diplomat, whose mission ends in Cameroon in September 2013, said his country just as other political stakeholders in Cameroon was looking forward to the convening of electors to the polls for municipal council and legislative elections. Britain, he said, was waiting to play a great role in monitoring the elections and helping civil society organisations. He also expressed satisfaction with the putting in place of the Senate, stating that his country looked forward to seeing the Senate play its legislative role.

The press conference also handled other topics such as Cameroon's National Day, the celebration of the Queen of England's birthday on Friday, June 7, 2013, advancement of democracy in Cameroon, same sex marriage, the Millennium Development Goals, evaluation of Cameroon's economic performance and bilateral historical relations between Britain and Cameroon. Answering questions on claims that Britain's lack of interest in English-speaking part of Cameroon played under its control as a UN Trust Territory, Bharat Joshi said his country recognised a single unified Cameroon.

High Commissioner Bharat Joshi giving a round up of main events for May highlighted the organisation of Journalism award in Cameroon to promote freedom of expression. Concerning events in June, he said it was a busy month for his country as it has taken over the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council and will grapple with the various conflicts and crisis. He also talked of the G8 meeting and celebration of the Queen's birthday.
