Cameroon-born budding NBA superstar Joel Embiid is said to be “devastated” by the death of his younger brother Arthur Embiid. Arthur who lived in Cameroon died Thursday October 16, Joel’s team - Philadelphia 76ers - announced.
Comcast Sports reported Joel’s agent, Arn Tellem as saying that ‘Joel is devastated.’
“We obviously consider members of our organization as a huge family,” director of public relations Michael Preston said. “When something of this nature occurs, it trumps a game. Our hearts, prayers and thoughts go out to his entire family.”
“I do and they are close to me,” Embiid’s teammate K.J. McDaniels said of having siblings himself. “I know it is a tough situation for him. My prayers go out to him and his family. I know he is a strong dude and he has to keep pushing. I will be here for him and keep him in my prayers.”
Joel Hans Embiid, 20, is a Cameroonian professional basketball player who plays for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The 76ers drafted Embiid third overall in the 2014 NBA draft, making him the third Cameroonian-born NBA player behind the likes of Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Luc Mbah a Moute.
The parents of Joel (who played college basketball at the University of Kansas) still live in Cameroon. He is one of three children, having a younger sister Muriel.
