Buea : Many wounded in Youth Day stampede

A stampede sparked off by a masked man in Buea on Thursday, February 11, 2016 sent pupils, students and teachers running for their dear lives with many sustaining various injuries.

The wounded were rushed to the Buea Regional Hospital Annex for treatment.

A hawker selling at the entrance to the hospital confirmed that several injured youths had been rushed to the hospital.

The stampede occurred at the Court Junction where the youths and their teachers were preparing to start the march-pass.

But as soon as the man with the mask appeared, the intention to march turned into a desperate anxiety to escape. This caused the youths to run helter-skelter as they mistook the masked man for a Boko Haram suicide bomber.

A policeman at the Buea Regional Hospital refused to comment when The Post approached him, saying he would not provide information for the newspaper that would make millions out of it.

Instead, your reporter was arrested and released later on and warned not to go back to the hospital.

However, eyewitness accounts suggested that more than 40 were injured in the stampede.
