A sensitisation meeting grouping inter-urban transporters, the “Go Now Now” Drivers’ Union, the Bui Drivers’ Union and local officials, held in Kumbo on July 7.

The meeting convened against a backdrop of price increase in fuel, was presided at by the First Assistant Senior Divisional Officer for Bui, Dr. Mohamadou who, in his speech, said it is the duty of every Cameroonian to contribute his own quota towards national development.

While recalling that the government has reduced parking tax by 50 per cent, he told transporters to stay put with the old transport fare until the meeting holding in Yaounde with transporters and the Minister of Commerce comes out with resolutions.

He lamented that some of the transporters and traders had automatically increased their prices of fuel and food without waiting for clearance before doing so.

He called on the transporters and traders to show a sense of patriotism and responsibility by maintaining the prices of fuel and goods before the increase in the fuel prices.

Dr. Mohamadou was not happy with transporters who do not respect the transport fare, overload their vehicles and ply the road without valid motor documents.

He added that the meeting was aimed at sensitising the public through the transporters not to exaggerate the taxi fares within Kumbo and from Kumbo to Bamenda.

The Deputy State Counsel for Bui, Evele Karkou, said it was a criminal act to allow clandestine transporters who do not have valid documents to transport people to Bamenda at FCFA 2,500 while those with valid documents do same at FCFA 2,000 and insisted that the “Clandos” have to abide to the law if they want to continue with the transportation business of passengers.

The arguments of some “Go now, now” drivers to increase the fare were dismissed.
