CAMELTA Determined to Promote Excellence

The 12th annual congress of the Cameroon English Language and Literature Teachers Association, (CAMELTA) opened in Yaounde yesterday, August 12, 2013.

The conference which runs till August 15, 2013 was preceded by a symposium of Teachers of English To Speakers of Other Languages International Association-TESOL on the theme "Achieving excellence in Engish language: Setting the pace in tune with changing times." The conference brings together CAMELTA delegates from across the country, in all 320 primary, secondary and university teachers.

Speaking at the opening, the Minister of Secondary Education, Louis Bapes Bapes said improvement of the quality of education is a priority of government in its efforts to meet Millennium Development Goals. Minister Bapes Bapes called for the participation of all stakeholders in the crucial endeavour. He added that the ministry will collaborate with CAMELTA for as long as the association continues to work for the attainment of an active dynamic pedagogy, contributing to the promotion of quality education.

CAMELTA has been evaluated by the British Council and the US Embassy as the best organised teachers association in Africa. CAMELTA's main achievements lie in successfully generating more and more teacher-friendly English language teaching in the last 13 years. The congress will end with the election of a new president of CAMELTA.
