The collected money is insurance which will be used to support compatriots in trouble in this South China province.
A few months ago, the Cameroonian community was shaken by the cremation of the remains of a compatriot in Guangzhou by the authorities of the province of Guangdong (southern China).
The family of the deceased in Cameroon could not raise enough fund to fly his remains back to Cameroon and the voluntary contributions made by other members of the diaspora in Guangzhou did not reach the required 130,000 yuan (more); the minimum for such operations.
Furthermore, Cameroon (as many foreign nationals living in China) face arrests by the police, detention, prison sentences and especially cases of ill-health, that can be very challenging. As a result of this, the diaspora of Guangzhou has just created a special fund to try to help all those who could be victims of one of these problems.
More than 30,000 yuan (approximately 2.4 million F) has already been deposited in this fund launched barely two months ago by the CCGC (Cameroonian community of Guangdong China) association.
The idea was welcomed with great enthusiasm. Bi-monthly General Assembly of the association, met Saturday, November 1, 2014 in a hotel in the city of Guangzhou and recorded contributions of 16,000 yuan (over 1.2 million F).
The Cameroonian diaspora in the Guangdong province is estimated at more than 400 people, according to data from the Embassy of Cameroon in Beijing. It is also the most significant Cameroonian community in China.
