The National Social Insurance Fund-CNPS has recently announced the introduction of a voluntary insurance scheme for independent workers and the informal sector in Cameroon.
The innovation that takes effect as from 3rd November 2014, gives an opportunity to truck pushers, barbers, traders, farmers and cleaners amongst others, to register with the CNPS in Cameroon.
The CNPS director, Noel Alain Olivier Mekulu Mvondo Akame, made the pronouncement recently in Yaounde at the Conference Hall of the Social Insurance Fund while initiating an information and awareness crusade.
Speaking during the occasion, Olivier Mekulu expressed satisfaction and noted that at least 80 percent of the population will finally be able to enjoy from social coverage initially enjoyed by only the formal sector.
The Director of CNPS further used the platform to inform Cameroonians on mobilization of all 33 social insurance centres from 3rd November, to receive and process all application files of independent workers for the voluntary scheme.
It is important to note that the move to extend social coverage in the country comes on the heels of a Prime Ministerial Order of 13th August 2014, which introduces justice and equity in the security system of Cameroon.
