Cameroon announced a reform of its military organization, particularly concerning the creation of a new military region, in the extreme north of the country. An overhaul endorsed by presidential decrees signed by Paul Biya who intervenes in the aftermath of another attack attributed to Boko Haram in which three soldiers were wounded.

Cameroon proceeded recently to a new re-organisation of its military build-up. Until now, the country had three military regions. It now has a fourth, in the extreme north of the country, with capital Maroua, where staff had already been consolidated, in June.

The objective is to strengthen and empower militarily at this border region in which Nigeria has been facing insurgencies for several months; the attacks which is attributed to the Islamist sect Boko Haram.

The military region of the far North will be equipped with an independent command and a gendarmerie. Previously, it was part of the Adamawa and North, with same military region and General Hippolyte Ebaka was in control. It thus gives way to two army colonels appointed by interim. The latter, whose identity is not yet known, will assume control of the third military region and the fourth newly created.

These changes would result in a strengthening of the number of soldiers. The figure, for the moment, not communicated. Through this re-organization, Cameroon hopes to better coordinate its forces in the fight against the Islamist sect Boko Haram.

This announcement came after three soldiers were wounded in an attack Thursday in a border village in Nigeria, 4 kilometres from Banderi. According to sources close to the military, three soldiers suffered wounds from the attack suspected to have been launched by Boko Haram.
