Five out of Cameroon’s ten regions are under the risk of a pig epizootic likely to kill more than 25 per cent of the country’s pig population, sources at the ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry told APA Wednesday.

The disease which appeared in the far northern part of the country since November has been spreading to reach the Central, Coastal, North-West and South-West regions.

However, the ministry reassured that the situation is not worrisome as yet, due to the quick response provided by the veterinary authorities.

The livestock department which recalled having invested close to CFA 4 billion francs to boost the pork industry since 2005 has been intensifying efforts to counter the pig disease.

The epizootic disease occurred in Cameroon in 1982, killing at least 80 per cent of the pig population.
