Canadian Nun recounts ordeal as captive in Cameroon

A Canadian Nun held captive for two months in Cameroon—likely by the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram—has discussed her ordeal.

Initially, “they were laughing and humiliating me,” said Sister Gilberte Bussiere, 76, according to The Catholic Register. “They were very disrespectful.”

Though “our material deprivation was harsh . . . I never felt so much God's presence as I did during my captivity,” she added. “I never enjoyed more deeply the soothing power of God's words, as well as the joys of prayer.”

“No, there's no way I can feel any hatred toward them,” she said of her captors. “When people are hungry, when they have no access to education or health care, they get angry. Some of them become extremists.”
