The China-based Eximbank has approved a CFA 400 billion francs loan for Cameroon in an effort to back the project for the connection of the capital, Yaounde and its outskirts in potable water, official sources unveiled on Tuesday.

Under the project, water will be tapped from the River Sanaga situated at some 60 kilometres from Yaounde to serve the capital and other neighboring towns.

In the long run 300,000 cubic metres of water will be produced per day with the potential of 400,000 m3 per day for the concerned area.

According to the Ministry of Water and Energy, the project which is due to kick off this year, will be completed within three years and will resolve the potable water shortages in some areas in Yaounde.
