Constitutional Council Rules on Petitions this Thursday

The Council will rule on the five petitions on April 26 and proclaim results on April 29.

All attention with regard to the April 14, 2013 first -ever election of Senators in Cameroon is focused on the Supreme Court acting as the Constitutional Council. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Alexis Dipanda Mouelle in a release announced the official proclamation of the election results on Monday, April 29, 2013.

Before the official proclamation of results, the Constitutional Council has to rule on the five petitions submitted by the National Union for Democracy and Progress, NUDP and the Cameroon Democratic Union, CDU calling for the cancellation of elections in five regions. Dr Adamou Ndam Njoya's CDU wants election results cancelled in the West Region where its list competed with that of the leading opposition, Social Democratic Front, SDF. Maigari Bello Bouba's NUDP equally wants the Council to annul the election results in the Littoral, Adamawa, North and Far North Regions. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in a release disclosed that the ruling on the petitions will take place during a session of the court on Friday, April 26, 2013 starting at 3:30 p.m.

In the meantime, preparations are heightening in the Supreme Court for the proclamation of Senate election results. The National Commission for the Final Counting of Votes finished its work on Friday, April 19, 2013. The Electoral Code in Section 69 (4) states that, "The National Commission for the Final Counting of Votes shall draw up a report of all its operations. The report signed by the Chairperson and Commissioners, together with appended documents, shall be forwarded within five days to the Constitutional Council."
