Creation of Pan-African University Council under discussion

The sixth conference of Ministers of Education of the African Union (AU) has opened in Yaounde.

The meeting which started on 17th November 2014 has brought together ministers representing the five African zones to discuss the creation of the Pan-African University Council, including the election of its executive body and headquarters.

Minister Youssouf Hadidja Alim of Basic Education is chairing the meeting. The Secretary General of Cameroon’s Ministry of Basic Education, Professor Ivo Leke Tambo notes that the extraordinary session will end up in the drawing of proposals for the posts of president and vice president of the council.

The proposal, Prof Ivo Leke Lambo says, will be sent for validation by the Heads of States Summit to meet in January 2015.

Discussions during the conference will also focus on the recommendations of the AU Summit in Malabo and the management of the African university in terms of admission, teaching and graduation of students.

The representatives attending the meeting are from Nigeria, Angola, Mauritania, Tanzania and Cameroon.
