Closed since November 3, 2010, the Douala University will finally be reopened at the end of November 2014. The announcement was made by Professor Dieudonné Oyono, rector of the institution, at the 33th session of its Board of Directors held this Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Graduate School based in Akwa.

The reopening will be "coupled with the installation of solar street lights on the campus."

The closure was done to embark on renovations. These renovations which were started during the era of Bruno Bekolo Ebe was supposed to last one year but it has taken over three years.

The reopening of the university has come as a relief to over 300 homes as their wards can enroll and resume without having to face high cost of housing around the campus. "We'll make sure that these provisions are made to accommodate students." Assured the rector. But this is not the first time that Professor Dieudonné Oyono has announced such developments.

On 10 October 2013, it had already been made known to the 31st session of the board of the institution that infrastructural works would be carried out during the 2013-2014 academic year.

It is noted however that, these buildings were allowed to house athletes during the last academic games organized at the University of Douala in May 2014.

The University of Douala also announced two major innovations during this academic year, namely the establishment of a digital library furnished with equipment. Also they will work on the auditoriums and classrooms and make available computers and projectors for smooth running of the institution.
