Lecturers at the University of Douala, members of the National Union of teachers of higher education (Synes) have been on strike since Monday, October 27, 2014.
They are demanding payment of their premiums for research which should have been paid to them since October 15, 2014. As a result of this, lecturers have resolved to boycott lectures until October 29.
They explained the situation to their students who recently returned to school. "It is a fund set up by the head of State to allow teachers to carry out research in all areas of discipline including the sciences to improve society in general. Without research, one cannot talk about development. All permanent teachers, lecturers, assistants lecturers are the main beneficiaries of this premium.", explains Dr. Wogaing Fotso, Secretary General of Synes, University of Douala branch.
Strike by lectures for their research premiums began last week by the University of Buea. According to Dr. Wogaing Fotso, several years ago, teachers received higher premiums for this. They received this money once every three months.
These payments were made from January to March then another payment is made from June to September, and the last payment in December. What the teachers are demanding today, is actually payment of the third installment that already lags behind because it had to be paid between 1st and 15th October of this month.
Lecturers embarked on this strike to display their discontentment to the authorities responsible for managing these funds.
