Douala embarks on a fight against urban disorder

Based on the country's vision of making Cameroon an emerging nation by 2035, the senior divisional officer for littoral, Naseri Paul Bea and the government delegate to the Doula city council, Fritz Ntone- Ntone have joined efforts to decongest the city.

To make their dream come true, specific areas in some strategic and overpopulated neighbourhoods were demolished to reduce congestion.

In the Aeroport neighbourhood heavy duty vehicles parked along the way including traders were sent away.

The famous Ndokoti Junction which is notorious for harbouring dangerous armed robbers with many make-shift shops was also given a facelift.

It was at this same junction that a heavy-duty vehicle recently crushed some people and property.

In the demolition effort, a good number of dresses, shoes, jewellery and a photocopy machine were swept away at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Douala.

The demolishing team also patrolled along the Mbopi market area where a similar exercise was carried out.

Finally, the team landed at the “Cite de Palmiers” where a recent accident had occurred killing six persons from an inter urban transport vehicle commonly called “cargo.”

In order to ensure a strict follow-up in all the demolished areas, a mobile intervention unit has been set up.

Three additional police posts to check urban disorder and criminality were assigned to Ndokoti.

Meanwhile intervention units made up of bicycles, motor cycles, and pickups are to carry out a daily inspection to eliminate disorder in the port city.

Above all, a hygiene and sanitation competition will be launched in December 2014 in which the cleanest council in the area will be awarded.

Douala is one of the cities in Cameroon noted for its over congested nature.
