The issuance of licenses to operate driving schools has been suspended in Cameroon for a period of one year.
This decision was outcome of a consultation meeting on 3rd November 2014 between the Minister of Transport, Robert Nkili and owners of driving schools.
During the meeting, it was revealed that just 102 of the 442 driving schools in the country are operating in conformity with the acceptable standards set.
A survey carried out indicates that about 154 of these schools operate without licenses.
The problems notwithstanding, stakeholders during the meeting resolved to professionalize training.
The Minister of Transport also frowned at the fact that some managers of these schools are deceptive; training is carried out without the necessary equipment while others are lured into believing that the training offered qualifies them to have international driving licenses or become drivers of heavy-duty vehicles.
In a more conciliatory approach, the minister cautioned school managers to conform to the regulations in force and improve training.
Minister Robert Nkili’s encounter with driving school proprietors is part of government’s effort to step up the campaign against insecurity in the highway.
