The Chairman of the Electoral Board of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Dr Fonkam Azu’u, has reiterated that ELECAM is a child of the Commonwealth that deserves all the attention of this Gentlemen’s Club.
Dr Fonkam Azu’u reiterated this point while receiving in audience, the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General to the 60th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, CPA Conference in Yaoundé, Amitav Benarji.
Briefing reporters at the end of the audience, the Electoral Board Chair, Dr Fonkam Az’u said “The Commonwealth has a long standing partnership with Elections Cameroon and since it started working, we have received a lot of delegations from the Commonwealth and they have also participated in observing elections in Cameroon notably the 2011 Presidential elections and the twin elections of last year.
ELECAM is a founding member of the Commonwealth Election Network (C.E.N). ELECAM is making very good use of its relationship with the Commonwealth”.
He further stressed that ELECAM is proud to be a child of the Commonwealth and reassured that they are working hard to make Commonwealth proud of ELECAM by constantly ameliorating the electoral process in order to earn more credibility and transparency in handling election issues in the country.
During the close to two hours audience, the august guest disclosed that the Commonwealth will give more assistance to improve upon Cameroon’s electoral process.
In a chat with the press, the head of the Political Division in the General Secretariat of the Commonwealth who represented Kamalesh Sharma in Yaoundé said, “The relationship between Cameroon and the Commonwealth is varied and covering a large number of fields.
We also have a very excellent working relationship with ELECAM and hope to consolidate it. The Commonwealth had an observer team in Cameroon during the parliamentary and local council polls of September 30, 2013, and we would want to follow up on its recommendations.”
