About 160,000 voters in Cameroon, including 5,000 from the Diaspora, have been registered during an exercise to revise the voting lists between early January and late August 2014, according to the electoral body.

The state-run Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) for polls and referendums management told APA on Friday that in general, the lack of enthusiasm among people who have reached voting age is justified by the fact that 2014 is not an election year in the country.

Following the clearance of the file in 2013, the electorate currently stands at 5.6 million people in a country of about 22 million inhabitants.

ELECAM hopes to see this figure increase to about 9 million people in 2018, the year when general elections in Cameroon is scheduled.
