Farmers trained on vegetable farming

This was during a one day intensive seminar organised by IRAD for farmers from some four regions,in Bafoussam,on 18, June,2015.

A one-day intensive inter-regional seminar organised by the Institute of Agronomic Research for Development (IRAD) and sponsored by the French debts-relief and development contract, C2D, has ended in Bafoussam, West Region on June 18, 2015.

It brought together some 45 small-scale farmers from the Littoral, Centre, Northwest and West Regions, with Martin Ngueguim of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation chairing. The training was aimed at increasing the production of beans and soja as well as related legume in the sector.

Speaking at the closing, the Regional Chief of Center of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation for the West, David Nguenga said the seminar falls in line with government policy of partnering with the private sector to develop an incubator farming approach that will give farmers access to knowledge and skills that will assist them improve their production system.

He explained that to meet President Paul Biya’s wish of moving Cameroon towards second-generation agriculture, small-holder farmers who are part of the value chain must learn modern techniques of production so as to improve productivity and output.

The resource persons with Bella Siri and Mboussi Messa of IRAD Ekona and Nchoutnji Ibrahim of IRAD Foumbot, drilled the participants on ways of improving production, such as nursery processing, composing, use of insecticides to fight crop diseases, and finally ways of maintaining steady increase in production. The seminar ended with award of certificates to course participants, and sample of beans and soja seedlings to the farmers.
