Feb 2008 protests:Authorities abandon youths in jail

When international organizations classify Cameroon as a country which least respects human rights, the government is on roof tops to deny any wrong doing, even if there is strong evidence.

Since the 2008 February demonstrations that left up to 40 people dead, according to government, and hundreds of others injured not all of them have gained their freedom. This raises the question about the application of the presidential pardon granted the demonstrators few months after.

In Dschang in the West Region five Cameroonian youths,Donfack Yanick Romain, Fomete Kenfack William Stephane, Tsafack Eric, Noumbo Bertrand and Tsafack Jean Pierre,who were arrested for ‘destroying property” are still languishing in jail, eight years after!

Cameroonians under the rights movement “February 2008 Protests in Cameroon” have petitioned the Ministry of Justice and all correspondences have remained dead letters.

“February 2008 Protest in Cameroon’s” Marcel TCHANGUE is accusing the Baffousam military Tribunal which is handling the matter of violating the article 221 of the Criminal Procedure Code which fixes a pre-trial detention for six months renewable once.

Letters from Cameroonian activists to the Ministry of Justice and the National Commission for Human Rights and Freedoms have remained unanswered.
