Cameroon coach Volker Finke has expressed delight after his side qualified for the 2015 AFCON following their 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Yaoundé on Saturday afternoon.

On 13 points with one game to spare, the Indomitable Lions are assured to finish top of Group D.

Cameroon’s successful qualifying campaign follows a four-year continental drought and a disastrous performance at the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, which added to the German’s satisfaction.

“It is the victory of solidarity amongst the players and the staff. It has been very difficult, we had a lot of problems, but we remained very serious and focused on the field,” Volker Finke said at the post-match press conference.

“To qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations after such a disastrous World Cup is something extraordinary.

“The match was tough today as we had to be in control. We had to move forward but also remain wary of the Congolese who are very dangerous on the counter attack.”

The Lions will now face Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan without much pressure on Wednesday, in their closing game of the qualifiers.

“We won’t have much pressure on our shoulders against Côte d’Ivoire. But we need to have a good game in order to continue to move forward.”
