Fire razes Douala Airport cargo terminal

A segment of the Cargo Terminal of the Douala International Airport has been completely chopped off by a fire that broke out at about 4 am Tuesday, November 11.

The fire, which started on the first floor of the one-storey, razed all office materials and chopped off roofs of some offices and crumbled sections of the walls.

The fire was stopped from crossing over the ground floor where luggages are stored. Fire fighters of the Airport immediately set to work but were later joined by the National Fire Fighters of the Ngodi Brigade in Ngodi to put off the inferno that took more than two hours.

The portion of the Cargo Terminal is not directly involved in airport operations. Léopold Longo, Airport Manager, said it does not affect flights and other operations of the structure: “Aircrafts can take off or land without any problems.”

Meanwhile, the Senior Divisional Officer for Wouri, Naseri Paul Bea, visited the structure and had a personal witness of the incident later that morning. A Commission of Enquiry has been set up to identify the cause of the fire as well as put up corrective measures to avert any future fire incident.
