Fire razed part of the building housing the Douala city hall on Monday night April 5, destroying two of the four floors of the building.
The fire broke out at around 11pm, sources said, adding that despite the intervention of firefighters who were able to tackle the infeno early on Tuesday, the damage was still significant.
The Governor of the Littoral Region, Joseph Beti Assomo who visited the scene opined that it was “too early to take stock, but the damage seems huge.”
According to him an “investigation will be launched to ascertain the cause of the fire and assess the impact of the disaster.”
According to Douala Urban Community (CUD), the fire was the third that had gutted the town hall after those of 2007 and 2011.
