Campaigns for the presidential position in the Meme Lawyers’ Association, MELA, intensifies as Barrister Musima Georges Lobe cum Mayor for the Konye Council is set to vacate his position.

A minimum of five lawyers are said to have announced their intention to be considered for the presidency.

The SUN gathered that Barrister Awutah Philip Atuba of the Amumba Law Firm, Barristers Mpako Jacob and Enu Patrick, outgoing vice president, have put through their application to that end. We have also learnt that Barristers Prince Nzoh Nkwelle and Ekolle Verine are also holding secret meetings wooing their colleagues to bestow on them the confidence to pilot the affairs of the association.

In a gathering last week organised by Barrister Awutah in one of the hotels in Kumba with a cross section of Lawyers, he announced that though not his official campaign launching, he put out his intention of taking up the position as he sees it as ‘the people’s call’.

According to his campaign manager, Barrister Pascal Meloko Nanje of Eyambe-Ebai Law Chambers, the election of Barrister Awutah to spearhead the affairs of MELA, is a done deal. He disclosed that all is set to give any challenger the run for their money and that what they are waiting for is just for the date to be announced.

Barrister Meloko disclosed that his candidate is having the backing of about 95 percent of senior legal luminaries in Meme not to talk of the junior ones who are eager to see MELA have a different touch especially at a time when the world has gone digital.

The MELA constitution however stipulates that only registered lawyers are eligible to stand for any position in the association hence it is likely that the elective general assembly shall produce fireworks.

Barrister Kenu Valentine, out going assistant scribe told THE SUN that there is no cause for alarm. He maintained that the elections shall be like any other election concerning a professional grouping. He hinted that he is also busy hunting for members to elect him as secretary general.
