Floods Render 26 Families Homeless in Babessi

Calm has returned to the community in Ngoketunjia Division in the North West Region as the population grapples with hygene and sanitation problems.

As at press time, Babessi, one of the 13 villages of Ngoketunjia Division in the North West Region was still grappling with the effects of ugly floods that destroyed some 50 houses and rendered 26 families homeless on September 9, 2012.

Five days after, the DO of Babessi subdivision, Ali Anogu told Cameroon Tribune that calm has returned and the population has been mobilised to handle hygiene and sanitation problems because the floods destroyed all toilets.

Another area of concern is displaced families who relocated with family members. They are suffering difficulties of accommodation and feeding because their foodstuff of mainly rice and corn disappeared with the floods. The D.O has also launched an appeal for assistance towards the frustrating situation.

The floods apparently took Babessi village by surprise .I is reported that heavy rains in the hill side neighbourhood of Jakiri subdivision caused the floods .It all started by 6:30 pm and by 7:00 pm , Babessi was buried in floods. Most affected were partS of Chui,Touncho and Mbaw quarters. By Thursday, September 13, standing water could still be found in the town and the population is already engaged in cleaning the town.

The President General of the Babessi Cultural and Development Association (WUCUDA),Nchechuma Banla Nchetivie says most affected included the homes of Titanise Tiendemfu,Simon Forka,Pa Nchetie,Nah Ngoko etc .He says it is the second time in 2012 that Babessi has suffered damage from floods and blames it on poor drainage which needs urgent attention to avoid future floods.
