Four Cameroonian soldiers have been fired recently for “unethical behaviour undermining the integrity of the defense forces” a ministerial edict issued by the Minister for Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo confirmed on Monday.
Although he stopped short of giving any detail of the quartet’s misconduct, Mr. Beti Assomo justified their removal as a face-saving move to “protect the honour and image of the Cameroonian army.”
According to other sources, the soldiers in question were reportedly convicted of theft, rape and other wrongdoings.
A week ago, Joseph Beti Assomo, returning from a visit to forces deployed in the east and north of the country warned of “disciplinary sanctions” against certain misbehaviours reported in the area.
While firmly condemning “despicable, isolated and unfortunate acts by a minority tarnishing the image of the defense forces against the backdrops of efforts to deal with the Nigeria-based Islamist sect Boko Haram the Cameroonian official hailed the morale, discipline and courage prevailing within the ranks of government soldiers.
He restated the importance of collaboration between people and defense forces in a bid to consolidate the army-nation theory.
