Maroua-Mokolo — The Holy Father named Rev Fr Bruno Ateba Edo on Saturday April 05 as the new bishop of the diocese of Maroua-Mokolo.
According to the Vatican Radio, the appointment follows the resignation of Bishop Philippe Albert Joseph Stevens, of the Young Brothers of the Gospel (dei Piccoli Fratelli del Vangelo) who has reached the recommended retirement age of 75 years.
At the time of his appointment, the bishop-elect, Rev Fr Bruno Ateba Edo, was the Regional Superior of the Pallottine Fathers for Cameroon and Nigeria. He was born on November 20, 1964 at Zoetelé, in the diocese of Sangmélima. Between 1988 and 1989 he joined and was in the formation house of the Pallotine Fathers.
Upon completion of his Novitiate Fr Edo went on to do his priestly studies of Philosophy in Rwanda before going back to Cameroon to pursue his theological studies. Soon after theological studies Bishop-elect Bruno Ateba Edo moved to Germany at the Pallotine Fathers Vallendar Theological Institute where he studied for a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology.
On August 15 1989 he took his first religious vows with his final or perpetual solemn vows following on only five years later in 1994.
Bishop-elect Edo has held a number of positions both within his congregation and in the universal church, including those of Parish priest, Rector of the Pallotine Theologate in Yaounde in Cameroon, Regional superior of the Society of the Pallotines for Cameroon and Nigeria and that of president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Cameroon, a post he held until the time that Pope Francis named him bishop of the diocese of Maroua-Mokolo.
The diocese of Maroua-Mokolo was established in 1973, and belongs to the ecclesial Archdiocese of Garoua.
