Gov't tightens ban on non-biodegradable packaging

The laws prohibiting the use of plastics packaging of less than 61 microns in Cameroon entered into force April 24, 2014.

One year after, government continues the fight to eliminate these packaging considered hazardous for human, animal and plant health.

After the phase of awareness, the repression actions (ongoing) permitted the seizure of more than 400 tonnes of packaging which were out of standard in December 31, 2014.

While the plastics professionals fear for the fate of their industry, the Ministry of environment, nature Protection and sustainable development (Minepded), has as primary concern the preservation of a healthy and sustainable environment for Cameroonians.

In interview, Hele Pierre, Minister of the environment, Nature Protection and sustainable development, gave an update on ongoing actions to totally eradicate plastics of less than 61 microns, the results have been already achieved for the future of plastic packaging in Cameroon.
