Groups protest in Yaounde against the anti-terrorism law

Society organizations and opposition parties descended Wednesday on the streets of Yaoundé to protest against the recent adoption by Parliament of a new anti-terrorism law.

The organizers of the event, with a collective civic dynamic in mind, asked president Paul Biya to postpone the promulgation of the Act which they considered repressive.

"Through this law, they are preparing for the Suppression of political demands by inserting it into a terrorist act. This is unacceptable", Belmond Biango, jurist and politician explained.

Section 2 of this Act on the Suppression of acts of terrorism stirs up controversy. The death penalty proposed by the Government to punish acts included in the Act, is strongly disputed.

"They cannot, in 2014, confuse terrorism with political demands and claims of freedoms and that's why we have the impression that those who govern in Cameroon have fears", Belmond Biango complained.
