The National Commission of Human Rights and Liberties has been evaluating the state of some basic human rights in Cameroon such as the right to basic health facilities, basic education, potable water, public order and tranquility in keeping with national and international ratified conventions.
In this respect, the Commission has deployed a theme of investigators to some neighbourhoods in Yaoundé to sample public view on their living conditions with respect to the above mentioned basic rights especially as we are in the heart of the dry season.
The team of investigators which have been working for the past one week in the Mfoundi division of the Centre region still has two weeks to complete their findings before expanding to other parts of the country.
The Secretary General of the Commission, speaking to the press last week in Yaoundé, said the focus is to collect data from the targeted population, actors and authorities charged with the promotion of these rights, analyze them before forwarding proposals to the appropriate sectors where they will be exploited to ameliorate the living conditions of Cameroonians in general.
In a more specific manner she added that the investigation will help determine the causes of the difficulties that hinder the population from accessing these basic rights, and the consequences on their living conditions.
This field work equally consists of sensitising the public on basic human rights, the various texts which guarantee these rights, and also awaken public awareness to work hand-in-hand with the commission, other actors and institutions involved in the promotion of human rights and the state in order to better ensure the respect of basic human rights in Cameroon.
