Insurance workers get pay rise

...An agreement to the effect was signed in Yaounde on May 7, 2014.

Workers in the insurance sector can now aspire for a brighter future. Salaries will be increased by at least 4 percent for all categories. In effect, Categories One to Six will get a five per cent salary increase, Categories Seven to Nine, four per cent while Categories Ten to Twelve will see their salaries rise by three per cent.

These are contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Insurance Companies in Cameroon was signed yesterday May 7, 2014 in Yaounde.

Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Gregoire Owona called on owners of insurance companies to respect the terms of the agreement as defaulters will have to face the law. He said the quest for better working conditions is in line with universal norms as stipulated by Conventions 155 of the International Labour Code that was ratified by Cameroon in 2011.

Thus, he called on workers to show proof of loyalty, devotedness, dignity, discipline, honesty and professional consciousness in order to benefit from their rights.

The agreement also offers workers bonuses and allowances such as mission allowances, housing allowances, rapid payment of accidents cases, strengthening of the solvability of insurances companies, revamping of the relations between insurers and the insurance sector in general. The event took place in the presence of directors of insurance companies, representatives of employers’ organisations and professional organisations as well as guests.
