Prof. Asonganyi was the voice of conscience and political righteousness in a country where democratic practice has often turned into egotism, tribalism and a brutal survival of the fittest.

Once fallen out with the SDF, as a man who understood the power of the media, resorted to the fourth estate, often scripting such articles only the fearless do – as brutally honest as he was, he told truth to authority within those lines. Now we will never read from him anymore.

The erstwhile Secretary General of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, Prof. Tazoacha Asonganyi is no more.

Details of his passing are still very sketchy but local media reports say that he died in Yaounde July 3, after a brief fight with a cancer infection. He was about to be evacuated abroad for medical attention before he met his demise, The Cameroon Journal learned.

Prof. Asonganyi last spoke to The Cameroon Journal on Thursday April 28, 2016, when he reacted to the death of Prof. Peter Agbor Tabi.

“The occurrence is regretful. Every human being who dies is a loss to society. His death is a loss for Cameroon. I received the news of his demise early yesterday (April 27, 2016) morning before 5am. I wish his family and every person dear to him the strength from the Almighty so that they can really support the situation,” Asonganyi said then.

It should be noted that after Asongangyi fell out with the SDF in the early 2000s, he remained apolitical – a strong critic of both the Biya regime and the SDF.

Until his transition, Asonganyi lectured in the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde I. He wrote countless of articles for newspapers in the country and participated in political debate programmes that help furthered the country’s nascent democracy.

A father of four – two boys two girls, Asonganyi hailed from Lebialem Division in the Southwest. He obtained a PhD in Bio-Chemistry in 1980 from the University of London and for the past 30 years of his life lectured and trained medical doctors at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Yaoundé I (former CUSS).
