Within the project for the supply of magnetic fluid for Lake Nyos and Monoun and the limitation of natural catastrophes in Cameroon, an accord was signed between the government of Japan and that of Cameroon in November, 2010 which enabled the supply of equipment worth FCFA 700 million.
The money was used to buy equipment to analysis water and gas in view of eliminating potential risk due to the emission of gas from Lake Nyos and Monoun. This is the fruit of the involvement of Japan and the management of natural catastrophes in Cameroon which dates more than five years.
In effect, after the Lake Nyos gas disaster of August 1986, the government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) sent a team of emergency rescuer to the region with an expert, Professor Minoru Kusakabe who joined an international group in charge of investigating the causes of the explosion.
Information from the Japan Embassy in Cameroon indicates that the aforementioned project, will last five years, a duration which will enable a better understanding of the causes and circumstances of the explosion and equally contribute in the drawing up of an efficient surveillance apparatus.
