Gérard Philippe Kuissu Mephou, Cameroonian political activist and journalist was released from custody by the Secretariat of State for defence, in Yaoundé Tuesday, March 17, 2015.
The Coordinator of the Organization of civil society, Tribunal article 53 noted that he did not know what his captors had against him. "They have not given the reasons for my arrest. They asked me why I posted the photo of the president bowing before the coffins of the Cameroonian soldiers killed at the front. This is a photo that someone posted on my facebook wall and I shared my opinion on March 9. It is on this basis that the gendarmes accused me of having hacked the website of the Presidency of the Republic," reflected Gérard Kuisou Mephou.
According to Paul Joel Kamtchang, member of the group, freeing Gérard Kuissu Mephou means the ex-detained "appears to be free on the matter relating to the site of the Presidency of the Republic". "Gérard Kuissu’s fundamental rights have been trampled through the facts and the law has been violated repeatedly during the procedure including arraignment by unidentified persons, without a warrant and without a title in violation of article 11 (2) of the Code of criminal procedure", deplored the group of organizations of civil society and political parties.
Gérard Philippe Kuissi Mephou was arrested March 14, 2015 in Douala with 3 other members of the Tribunal article 53 (Benjamin Guifo, Elvadas Kani, and Akwe Sab). The three companions of Gérard Kuissu were released two hours after while he was transferred Monday, March 16, 2015 to Yaoundé. Pressures from all sides have undoubtedly contributed to his release.
