Lawyers advised to shun blackmail, corruption

Some 15 newly sworn-in advocates have been advised to shun vices such as blackmail, back stabbing, harassment of clients, corruption and the penchant for money, if they intend to succeed in their profession.

The call was made by Justice Anthony Nana and Justice Mbonge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 15 Lawyers.

“Your profession is a noble and most envied one, so, avoid coming late to Court, or appearing before a Magistrate in rags. While in Court, avoid dancing on one spot or claiming to know more than anyone else or challenging the magistrate. All of us are human beings and you do not need to over stress a point.”

“As a Lawyer, avoid the practice of always pinning down your clients on percentages to be shared from the booty if a case is won,” Justice Mbonge, averred.

He told them to be assiduous in their profession, because, as he puts it; “The job of a lawyer is not a bed of roses, the challenges will always be there, but you must exercise self-control.”

The Bar Council President, Barrister Francis Sama Asanga, while presenting the new advocates, appreciated the patience exercised by the 15. He urged their parents to continue supporting them.

He hailed the Bar Council for the success of the swearing-in ceremony, saying that when the 1,453 lawyers whose results were recently released would be sworn-in, it will add more impetus to the Bar.
