Littoral: Updates from the Douala City Council

Douala over the weekend recorded some significant changes at the level of the Region and Municipalities.

1) Government Delegate on fact finding visit

The Government Delegate of the Douala City Council was on the field to evaluate urban development construction works. In a bid to improve speculation and check accidents, a number of roads were earmarked for rehabilitation. It was therefore to evaluate the advancement of these works and appreciate the condition under which the technicians work that Dr. Fritz Ntone Ntone went out.

The project, in the Bonapriso area which is worth 1.2billion francs CFA is 58% complete.

On the second stop, around the Akwa area, the project cost 1.5billion and is 20%complete.

The third stop around the New Deido Market and Kotto road, is worth 2billion has just begun.

On each stop, the Municipal Police reinforced order by destroying attachments, abandoned cars, call box kiosks and other make-shift attachments that do not respect the three metre space prescribed by the City council.

2) S.D.O frowns at misuse of Tricycles

The Senior Divisional Officer for Wouri Naseri, Paul Bea, organised an impromptu check last Friday.

His focus was on the recent phenomenon of tricycles that were fast replacing township taxis. To check urban accidents, the SDO had placed a band on the transportation of persons on these tricycles limiting its usage only for goods.

Three months after the SDO’s injunction, the situation seemed to have become more chaotic, as passengers are still being transported and worse of all most of the owners would not possess valid documents.

A number of these tricycles were therefore impounded pending the payment of fines and regulations of the administrative document needed.

3) Law makers in unison with New Bell Population

A delegation of officials led by Senator Siegfried David Etame Massoma was in New-Bell to discuss the decentralization process, economic issue and the threat posed by Boko-haram.

The delegation held talks with councillors of the Douala II Municipality.

The Municipal authority complained that they have been deprived of taxes collected from the Douala International Airport and the Central Market and Marche Congo all installations found within the Douala II Municipality.

Denise Fampou complained that, the Douala II population are therefore being denied the social amenities including employment for the Youths.

The Delegation’s leader, Senator Etame Massoma promised to table the complaints during discussions at the Upper House.
